History of the Teamsters

Who are the Teamsters?

We are working people just like you!

The Teamsters are working men and women, 1.4 million strong, from across the United States and Canada. We are truck drivers, police officers, public employees, construction workers, teachers, firefighters, nurses, warehousemen and many other professions.

What makes us different? We are organized! Together we have a strong voice to build a better future for our families and ourselves.

  • We have a legally binding contract for our members with their employers
  • We decide together what will be in our contracts, and we win better wages, benefits and working conditions
  • We get respect and dignity at our job
  • We run our Union as a democracy, from top to bottom. Teamsters Union Local 166, based in Bloomington California, works in the Inland Riverside, San Bernardino, and San Diego counties. Our 7,000 plus members work as laborers, chauffeurs, drivers, warehousemen and construction. Elected officers of rank and file, just like you, run our local executive board.

Are you satisfied with the status quo? Don't you want better wages, benefits, job security and respect on the job that only a Teamsters contract can bring?

Why Join the Teamsters?

Most employers try to talk workers out of organizing. Why? Because employers know that, with a Union, workers gain power to make their voice  heard and the employers must listen.

That is exactly what a Union is all about, having the power to stand up for our families, our future and ourselves. Having a strong, collective voice to stand up to our employers to gain decent working conditions, wages, benefits, job security along with dignity and respect in your place of work.

When we stand alone, we are powerless. Your employer holds all the cards and calls all the shots. By standing together, workers gain a seat at the table and the ability to demand a fair deal for all.

We believe that talk is cheap and that false "promises" can't protect families or jobs. We understand that the only way working people can truly be protected in their jobs and future is by standing together with your co-workers and negotiate a legally binding Union contract.

Had enough of broken promises? Tired of lousy pay and working conditions? Do you want respect in your place of work and security for your family?

Organize your Workplace!

Not represented by a Union, but want to be?

When workers come together to form a Union, you get the right to negotiate with your employer over wages, benefits and working conditions.

Regardless of the industry you are in, the process for forming a Union is similar:

  1. Get together with your co-workers who may share a common interest in organizing a Union
  2. Talk to a union organizer to learn the next steps
  3. Talk with your co-workers to build support for the Union
  4. Show that support through an election or a card-check once you have a strong majority

Now that there is a Pro Union majority, together you vote through the election process for the Union to represent you and a contract.

Once a Union has been certified or recognized, the employer is required to bargain over your terms and conditions of employment with your Union representative.

Your Rights as Americans are Protected

We have the freedom to organize and form Unions without interference from our employers. When you support forming a Union or engage in Union activities, federal and state law protects you from harassment by your employer.

If your rights are violated, report it to the National Labor Relations Board regional office or Teamsters Local in your area;

U.S. Labor Law says it is illegal for employers to engage in;

  • Surveillance of workers who attend Union meetings, or any undercover activity which would indicate that employees are being spied on
  • Threating or punishing workers with termination, lay offs, cut hours, cut duties, or discipline for Union activity
  • Granting or promising wage increases, benefits improvements, promotions, improvement in working conditions, or special occasion to keep the Union out
  • Threatening or permanently closing operations as a form of punishment for Union activity
  • Questioning employees about Union matters, Union meetings, Union interest, how they intend to vote or about other employees feelings toward the Union.

All of these acts violate Federal Labor Law and your rights as Americans. Stand up for dignity and respect in your place or work.

Organizing is your right. Secure your future with a Union contract.
